AMCP organized the first US Midwest Medical Delegation that visited China from 10/16/06 to 10/23/06. Dr. Steven Shu led the delegation to visit Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital (Click this link or open the PDF file for details) in Hangzhou and Zhoushan Municipal Peoples Hospital in Zhoushan (Click here). Members of the delegation included Dr. John Chen (gastroenterology), Dr. Kenneth Liao (cardiovascular surgery) and Dr. Zhaoping Li (traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture) of AMCP as well as Dr. Ling Xia (dermatopathology) of Wisconsin, Dr. Yongling Pu (radiology) of Chicago and Dr. Guozheng Liu (director of a family practice residency program) of Michigan. Dr. Shu talked about problems in the Chinese medical system and introduced modern hospital administration system to the hospitals. He also gave a lecture on stem cell in treatment of heart failure for Dr. Jianyi Zhang of University of Minnesota who could not go at the last minute. Dr. Chen gave an update on hepatitis B management and participated in patient care and education of residents and fellows. Dr. Liao introduced minimally invasive cardiac surgery and took part in a heart valve repair surgery. Dr. Pu talked about clinical application of PET and functional brain MRI. Dr. Liu gave several lectures covering resident training and recognition and treatment of depression. The delegation members had extensive interaction with their Chinese counterparts and were very well received. Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital had the first hospital-wide Academic Week to coincide with the delegations visit. Both hospitals expressed wishes to continue long term cooperation and exchange.
